WALDO/KANSAS CITY, MO (): A Waldo County Technical Center networking technology student who struck gold last spring at the state SkillsUSA competition recently proved he can hold his own with the best in the nation.

Corey Needham, a 2007 graduate of Mount View High School, placed seventh in the computer maintenance technology secondary division at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, Mo.

From June 25 to 30, Needham and 43 other top students from around the country took part in more than two days of skills demonstrations.

During the conference, Needham also earned CompTIA A+ certification, and performed a variety of computer service, diagnostic and configuration tests.

Last March, Needham earned a gold medal for being the top in his field at the Maine SkillsUSA competition at United Technologies Center in Bangor.

Jon Morrison, Needham's computer and networking technology instructor at WCTC, said the stellar student plans to pursue a college degree with a computer technology concentration.

Morrison is no stranger to the national SkillsUSA competitions — when he was a student, he medaled twice at similar events.

Needham, 18, is the son of Thomas and Athena Needham of Liberty.

SkillsUSA is an organization with international membership that includes secondary and postsecondary students enrolled in trades-oriented education programs. Students are encouraged to develop professional and leadership skills through a variety of activities, including the National Leadership and Skills Conference.
