The Horticulture/Landscaping program is designed for students who like being outdoors, working with
the environment. This can be a one, two or three year course. Students can elect to receive one science
credit for completing the program. Students are prepared to continue on to post-secondary education or
to go directly into the work force.
This program offers students a variety of experiences in the horticulture industry. Students learn the
basics of growing plants both indoors and outside. The major areas of emphasis are on landscaping,
greenhouse management, floral design and interior plantscaping. The program includes the use of small
power equipment and large tractor operation.
The classroom, greenhouse and school grounds provide practical learning and work opportunities in
commercial horticulture. Students plan, install and maintain the landscaping on the school grounds as
well as working on projects off-campus. The greenhouse is used year-round for projects, experiments and
a spring seedling sale. Students run a flower shop and care for plants placed throughout the building.
All students in this program are members of the Waldo County FFA Chapter which is a national leadership
organization providing opportunities for career development, leadership skills and scholarships.
