Fighting Malware

[Abstract: The proliferation of malware (programs that are installed without the knowledge or consent of computer owners) has become a major problem for computer owners.  This article looks at the sources of the problem and offers basic recommendations for dealing with malware.]

Introduction
The Internet has had a profound effect on the way that people communicate.  Much of this change has enabled great advancements, but there have been several increasingly troublesome developments.  Prior to 2001, the number of malicious activities that affected computers and users on the Internet was relatively modest.  Most problems tended to involve "virus" attacks that were crafted by people interested in discovering "exploits" out of curiosity, amusement, or self-promotion.  Since that time, the playing field has changed greatly.  These original motives have been largely surpassed as people have discovered the lucrative value of using exploits to deceive or steal from unsuspecting computer users.  This new reality has dramatically changed the way that computer users need to view their own safety strategy while using the Internet.
