Computer Technology

Computer Case The Computer Technology course is traditionally offered as the beginning course in the program. Students have the opportunity to learn about computer hardware and software technology through a combination of hands-on projects and theory studies.

The course has a specific concentration in topics that correlate with the CompTIA® A+ exam objectives . At the end of the course, students who are interested in achieving certification will have the opportunity to take the exam. Students who meet qualifications will have the opportunity to take the exam at low or no cost.

The Computer & Networking Technology program has an articulation agreement with Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield.  After completing the program and achieving certification in the A+ and Network+ exams, students are eligible to receive 7 credits in the Applied Electronics & Computer Technology program.  A dual enrollment agreement also provides an opportunity for students to complete Computer Operating Systems (ETC-110) and receive 3 credits.

The areas of study in the Computer Technology course include:

  • Identification & purpose of hardware components
  • Building, repairing, and maintaining systems
  • Installing & maintaining operating systems & application software
  • Introductory network concepts
  • Introductory web page design and content management
  • Operating systems covered include:
    • Windows XP Professional
    • Linux [Ubuntu, Mandriva]
    • Windows Vista
  • Configuring security settings & software
    • Software firewalls
    • Supervision and monitoring
    • Software upgrades & patches
    • Malware detection & prevention
