WCTC Students Pass CompTIA A+ & Network+ Exams - June 2007
Four students in the Computer and Networking Technology courses at Waldo County Technical Center achieved CompTIA A+ and Network+ Certifications. The students took a sequence of 90 minute exams during a test session held at Mid Maine Technical Center in Waterville. Chad McIntire, Corey Needham and Vinton Whitcomb of the Networking Technology course earned Network+ certification after passing the written exam. Jeffrey Emery of the Computer Technology course earned A+ Certification after passing the Hardware and Operating System exams. Corey Needham of the Networking Technology course also completed the Hardware exam requirement of the A+ Certification.

CompTIA is an industry organization that provides certification examinations for Information Technology professionals. A+ and Network+ certifications are internationally recognized industry credentials that validate the knowledge of computer service and networking professionals. The exams cover a broad range of hardware, software, and networking technologies, but are not bound to any vendor-specific products. 

WCTC FFA Takes First Place and is Off to National Convention!
FFA students from the Waldo County Technical Center's Horticulture and Natural Resources program attended the State FFA Convention in Orono, Maine on May 10 & 11, 2007.  The students competed in Career Development Events, attended meetings, tours and awards banquets during the two day convention.
The Floriculture team took first place in their event.  Team members were:  Tom McKay, Gabe Shute, Jake Moulton and Karen Mehuren.  Tom McKay also won first place in the individual component.  The Floriculture team will be going to the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis in October.
The Nursery/Landscape team placed second in their event.  Team members were: Tom McKay, Gabe Shute, Jake Moulton and Josh Hubbard.  In the individual component, Tom McKay placed first and Josh Hubbard placed second.
The Forestry team placed third in their event.  Team members were:  Brandi Chaffee, Josh Hubbard and Karen Mehuren.
The students are looking for sponsors to help them go to Indianapolis in October.  Businesses are asked to contact Instructor Patrice Janssen at 342-5231 ext 102 for more information.

Computer & Networking Students Achieve  CompTIA® Certifications
June, 2006

Five students in the Computer & Networking Technology program passed exams in the A+ and Network+ certification series on June 8th at Mid Maine Technical Center in Waterville.  Aaron Cooper and Cody Keyes completed the Network+ certification exam.  Tory Stark and Vinton Whitcomb completed the A+ Hardware and Operating Systems exams to achieve A+ certification.  James Johnson completed the A+ Hardware exam.  The CompTIA exams are internationally recognized certifications for professionals employed in the Information Technology careers.  Students achieving certification can attain employment in these fields, obtain college credits, and can use the certifications to meet requirements for advanced certifications.  Congratulations to these students.

Ford/Triple A Troubleshooting written examination - 2006
Belfast Area High School and Waldo County Technical Center Automotive students Josh Dudley and Jason Fletcher placed in the top 20 of more than 250 students who took the Ford/Triple A Troubleshooting written examination. Because of their finish they will compete with nine other teams around the state in the "hands on" portion of the contest. This year's contest vehicles will be 10 identical 2006 Ford Escapes.

Lexile Testing
Underclassmen at WCTC have been given standardized lexile testing during the first half of May. Students read a 20 minute set of statements and answer questions regarding the text. The lexile evaluation software varies the difficulty of the text adaptively according to student responses. The results of the testing will benefit teachers and students by establishing a clearer link between the reading level of course curriculum materials and student reading abilities.

SkillsUSA State Conference
Students from the SkillsUSA club at WCTC participated in the State Conference held March 9th and 10th.  Students representing many of the programs also competed in skills competitions.  The event was action packed with great involvement from the students.  Congratulations to all of the members and advisors who made the event a success.

SkillsUSA Local Competition
The SkillsUSA local competition will be held on January 25.  Students in a number of programs will be participating in competitions that will feature trade skill demonstrations, certification testing, troubleshooting and diagnostic tests, and professional assessments.  Students who are not participating in the competitions will have the opportunity to tour through the building to see what is involved in the various demonstrations.

Construction Progress
The WCTC expansion project is nearing completion.  New classrooms have been opened for the Strive and Culinary Arts programs and additional areas have been opened for dining and assembly.  The Business Applications classroom is nearing completion, with courses scheduled to start in the 2006-2007 school year.
Work and equipment had been approved for upgrades to the school network during the 2005 summer break.  These changes are nearing completion and have allowed the school to modernize many network hardware functions.

Computer & Networking Technology Courseware
The Computer & Networking Technology courses at WCTC are following the successful model of MIT by providing online access to all course labs and assignments. The currently published material includes subjects covered during September, October, and November. Each monthly directory includes a ZIP archive file that contains the complete set of files for the month.

WCTC Prepares "Keep ME Warm" Volunteers
Waldo County Technical Center has formed a group of volunteers who will be participating in the Keep ME Warm project on October 29 & 30.  Teams consisting of a volunteer staff member and two students will be working to winterize homes for area elderly residents.  You can read more about the Keep ME Warm project at the Keep ME Warm web site.

Construction Accident
At approximately 11 AM, October 28, an accident occurred at the Technical Center while construction workers were moving supplies with a forklift. A crew member suffered injuries to both legs when he became caught as the forklift was moving. The man is expected to recover from the accident and has been released from the hospital.

SkillsUSA Registration
Students intending to register for SkillsUSA during the 2005 - 2006 school year need to pay their dues by the end of October (October 31).  The registration dates have been changed this year and requires that all schools submit rosters and fees earlier.  The student cost is $7.50.  Please contact Ms. Gharst or Mr. Morrison if you have questions.

WCTC Student Injured in Accident
WCTC is saddened by the accident that occurred on October 3rd when Robert Sanders was seriously injured outside the school as he was riding his bike onto the highway.  He was hit by a vehicle while in route to school at Belfast. Fortunately, we've received information that he has been downgraded from 'critical' to 'serious' condition.  Robbie has been an active member of the Computer & Networking Technology program, having achieved CompTIA A+ certification in his previous year at the technical center. We all hope for his full and speedy recovery.  [Update:  Robbie has returned to classes at BAHS and WCTC.  His recovery has been very rapid and we wish him success as he resumes studies.  January 7, 2005.  Source: jmm]

Katrina Relief Fundraiser
The students at Waldo County Technical Center had a tall order to fill when Bob Provan announced his intent to match donations raised by school students with up to 1,000$ for aid and assistance to those suffering from hurricane Katrina. Students not only met the challenge, but handily exceeded it within a week by raising over 1,200$. Congratulations and thanks to all of the people who contributed and helped make the fundraiser a runaway success!

Welcome to new and returning students
Classes have started at WCTC and we welcome all of our new and returning students.  Many changes have occurred during the summer including work area improvements for many classrooms.  We hope that you like the changes and want to hear your feedback. 

School renovation and expansion
The work has continued on the facility expansion at WCTC.  Work is slated to be finished in the main hallway in time for school to start on September 7th.  Additional sections will be completed during October & November.

School starts soon
The first student day for classes at WCTC will be September 7th.  All participating districts will be starting on this day.  This includes MSAD 3, MSAD 34, and MSAD 56.  We look forward to seeing everone!

SISME 12 to be released
SISME Database SystemWork has concluded in the final development stages for SISME12, the web based rewrite of the student information system.  Despite setbacks for developers, data imports have continued and the system will be ready to test in September.

Prudential Financial honors WCTC student
Moxi Palmer, a student in the Early Childhood Occupational Education program at WCTC has been recognized as a Distinguished Finalist in the The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for 2005.  Moxi was recognized for her outstanding community service involvement during a medal presentation at the school on April 1.  Read more about this award at the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards web page.
