Future Search Weekend

Future Search is a process designed to allow an organization to look at itself.  It looks at the past and present events in history, as the basis for what happens to schools.  It combines these events with the historical events in the school through several facilitated exercises that determine what is good and should be preserved going forward.  The process then moves to looking at the role of the school in the community, and how it should serve the community in the future.  The ending exercise is to determine what the school needs to fulfill this expectation.  Our program began with dinner and a 4 hour session on Friday evening, and continued for another 6 hours on Saturday.  The group of participants included a cross section of the community with representatives local business,  faculty, students, and administration WCTC Facility Photofrom all 4 schools, parents, and government and school boards.

Dick Babb of the Center FOR EDUCATIONAL SERVICES served as the facilitator for the Future Search Retreat

To relieve tension and freshen the thought processes, physical activities were intermixed with the others.

WCTC Facility PhotoFollowing many exercises, discussions, and group activities the following conclusions were reached.  The school had a rich heritage and identity that should not be lost. The staff and their accomplishments were well respected in the community, and students leaving WCTC were well prepared for careers or additional education.

The final part of the weekend was spent looking at the future of WCTC in the community, and the following goals for further success were established. These goals are listed in the priority order established by the participants.

  1. Spiffy and expanded facility
  2. Community relationships/visibility
  3. Full time program
  4. Exposure at an earlier age
  5. Expanded programs
  6. Apprenticeship programs
  7. Preserving what's working in climate/culture

Using this weekend as a guide the appropriate actions were started to achieve these goals.
