November 2004
There were 2 questions on the ballot for this funding. The first to
approve the loan from the Revolving Fund, and a second to approve the additional
$500,000. Both items passed with wide margins, which now put the
responsibility on the school to wisely spend these funds.
With the bond issues approved,
the process to select an architect began. Five firms answered the
public advertisement, and three were interviewed. The concepts presented
by these firms were unique and all had merit. Richard Higgins
Associates of Rockland were selected to plan and design the renovations and
additions to the facility. Following all the required processes of design,
review, and approval, we were able to seek bids on the project by late spring.
There were a number of bidders, and Catalano Construction of Thomaston was
chosen as the general contractor. At the same time Mike Hogan was contracted to
act at owner representative for the project. It was a real advantage to
have all of the parties to the project nearby.
Construction began prior to the close of the 2005 school year. Until
the close of school, construction efforts focused on preparing for the
additions. The only class disruptions involved the Health Science program,
and alternative classroom arrangement were made.
| This is the southwest corner where the new Culinary Arts area and
public gathering areas get constructed. |
 |
 |
The construction on the west end of the building began with a temporary
wall in the existing Health Science area. With the temporary wall in place the existing exterior wall could be removed,
and the digging started. |
 |
With the wall removed some serious digging took place for the
footings for the new Culinary Arts addition. |
 |
It takes a lot of piping and conduit to make a kitchen functional. |
| It is almost a kitchen. The hoods and fixtures are being
installed |
 |
 |
The southwest corner was completed during Christmas vacation, and
occupied following vacation. This area was designed for the
Culinary Arts program, and school and public gatherings |
 |
This is the new dining room. It is used for public gatherings, and
staff lunches. The doors in the background lead to the cafe. |
| This is the new cafe. This cafe is open to the public 3
days a week by reservation only. It provides students with the
serving side of the food services industry. |
 |
 |
Looking from the cafe into the kitchen. Sure is bright and
shiny! |
 |
Washing is a major part of food services. The new kitchen has
9 sinks, a dishwasher, and its own laundry. |

This page and the next page will be
periodically updated to feature other areas of the project.
