1975 - 1994

The Beginning

This facility was created in 1973 by an act of the Maine Legislature under L. D. 255. This legislation set up Vocational Region 7, and established the original Cooperative Board and school administration.  Following all the necessary community surveys and approvals, the building opened for students in September 1975.  Initially 8 programs were offered including Agriculture, Auto Body, Auto Mechanics, Building Construction, Electricity/Electronics, Health Occupations, Heavy Equipment, and Maintenance Mechanics. That number has grown to 20 programs today.  The programs offered have changed to meet the changing needs of the businesses in the communities served by the school, and the overall needs of new careers and additional post-secondary education being pursued by the students.

Done Right the First Time

Due to the quality of the structure constructed and opened in 1975, all maintenance and improvements during this period could be covered by the monies in the annual school budget.  This seems to be the beginning of the taxpayer getting solid value for monies invested in the school.  The original structure is as sound today, as when it was built.  Several studies conducted during the period prior to the latest round of additions and renovations found no structural deficiencies or problems needing attention.  All the changes in the last 11 years have been related to wear, code changes, energy efficiencies, or new and improved areas for current programs.

The school name was changed from Waldo Regional Vocational Center to Waldo County Technical Center in 1999 to reflect the changing programs.
